More UK households now keep dogs than cats, according to research carried out by Mintel for the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA). However, the number of cats in the UK still exceeds the number of dogs (8.6 million, compared to 8.3 million) because households more commonly own more than one cat.

A UK study has suggested that children who live in homes with a dog are on the whole more healthy.

Researchers from St. Georges’s, University of London, studied 2,000 children aged 9 and 10 years old and found reduced obesity rates were present in those who came from families who owned a dog.

Eight-year-old black labrador, Treo, has been awarded the Dickin Medal for sniffing out roadside bombs in Afghanistan. The Dickin Medal is the animal equivalent of a Victoria Cross and is the highest accolade a military animal can expect.
