A to Z of Dogs

Years of indiscriminate breeding has made the average Labrador Retriever puppy overly hyper, aggressive and riddled with health problems, says dog owner Sherry Crowell.

Labrador Retrievers have a reputation for being very outgoing and easy to maintain, but Crowell asserts that with the breed being so popular, there are many breeders producing puppies that they have not taken the time to breed correctly. It is this which, according to Crowell, has changed the Labrador Retriever over the last decade. She concedes that good breeders do exist, but believes that they are far outnumbered by bad breeders who do not perform health testing on their dogs, nor take the dogs temperament into consideration.

Humane shelters and breed rescue groups are packed with Labrador Retrievers due to temperament problems and health problems, mainly from indiscriminate breeding.
